Sendai

The joint poster of the ESC and EAEE  was presented at the UNISDR Science and Technology Conference on the Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

A tutorial workshop on induced seismicity by gas production/storage was held in Hannover, Germany on 23 November 2016

The list of speakers included the following persons

Dr. Bernard Dost (KNMI, NL) on seismic monitoring of Groningen

Dr. Peter Fokker (TNO, NL) on geomechanial modelling of Groningen

Dr. Mariano Garcia-Fernandez (CSIC, E) on the abandoned Castor gas storage

Dr. Jean Grasso (U Grenoble, F) on gas production in Lacq

Dr. Enrico Priolo (OGS, I) on the Midandola oil field, gas storage ...

Prof. Peter Styles (U Keele, GB) on the Cuadrilla shale gasfrack in Bowland

Prof. Manfred Joswig  (U Stuttgart, D) on seismicity in the northern German gas fields

The workshop was organized by FKPE (Forschungskollegium Physik des Erdkörpers e.V.), but it was also the first activity of the ESC Working Group on induced seismicity established in 2016.

The 35th General Assembly of the ESC

was successfully held in Trieste, Italy, from 4 to 9 September 2016. There were 536 registrations from 50 different countries.

The resolutions adopted at the General Assembly can be found here

The program outline of the session on the Amatrice earthquake can be found here

The following keynote lectures are available on video:

KL1 Dario Albarello: Extensive application of seismic microzoning: methodological and socio-political issues in the Italian experience   View here

KL3 Barbara Romanowicz: Global imaging of the Earth's mantle in the era of numerical wavefield computations   Here

KL 4 William L. Ellsworth: Managing the hazard of induced earthquakes in a changing world  Here

and

Enrico Priolo: Natural, triggered, or induced? An Italian/European perspective on the theme of monitoring and discrimination of induced seismicity   Here

As part of the General Assembly, the Young Seismologist Training Course (YSTC), organized this time by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), together with the European Seismological Commission, was held at the ICTP campus in Trieste from 29 August to 3 September. The ESC dedicated the course to Peter Bormann.
