Resolutions as adopted in Geneva September 2006

EUROPEAN EARTHQUAKE CATALOGUE OF DAMAGING EVENTS

Recognizing

The need for a commonly agreed upon European-Mediterranean Earthquake Catalogue of damaging events,

Considering

The present availability on the web of numerous catalogues containing fake and doubtful data, errors and inconsistencies

The ESC urges

The European seismological community to co-operate in order to compile such a catalogue.

EMSC MACROSEISMIC QUESTIONNAIRE

Considering

That access to the internet in ESC countries gives people the possibility to report on felt earthquakes in real time;

That the EMSC is testing a macroseismic questionnaire for this purpose

The ESC recommends

That the final draft is revised and approved by a related Working group and that the final version of the questionnaire is translated into all ESC national languages.

SUPPORT TO EARTHQUAKE MONITORING AND SEISMOLOGICAL RESEARCH

Recognizing

The crucial importance of seismological institutions in ESC countries for the advancement of seismology and mitigation of seismic risk in the ESC area,

The need for a detailed monitoring of earthquake activity in the ESC area, the ESC

Urges

All governments in ESC countries to provide adequate support to earthquake monitoring and seismological research

Recommends

That all institutions dealing with seismology in ESC countries are identified and a registry of such institutions is compiled, as well as a list of all existing networks, to be posted on the ESC webpage

THE INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCE OF SEISMOLOGY AND EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS - A JOINT COMMISSION OF IASPEI-IAEE

Recognizing

the new initiative towards a Joint IASPEI-IAEE Working Commission (JWC) – The International Alliance of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Professional Associations - for promoting worldwide advocation of seismic safety and for influencing public policy in order to reduce seismic losses,

Considering

that ESC is a regional commission of IASPEI,

The ESC Recommends

that the Council mandates the Executive Committee to take the necessary actions for making ESC actively participate in the development of JWC-related initiatives in the European-Mediterranean region.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH FOR RISK REDUCTION

Recognizing

That the development of educational strategies has a key role in the reduction of social vulnerability to seismic risk and that this topic is of strategic value

The ESC recommends

That special efforts are made to ensure that reliable and authoritative education and outreach tools are distributed to the public.

THANKS

Acknowledging

The hard work and warm welcome of the Local Organizing Committee in arranging the XXX General Assembly of the ESC in Geneva, organised within the first European Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology, and noting the success of the sessions, and fruitful outcomes of many meetings and debates, the ESC Council

Thanks

The LOC for all their efforts and expertise in organizing such a successful and memorable occasion in all respects: the quality of the facilities and excellent social program.
