The Albanian seismological community mourns the passing of Prof. Dr. Shyqyri Aliaj, who died on 27 May 2026 at the age of 90.

Prof. Aliaj was one of Albania's most distinguished Earth scientists and a pioneer in the fields of neotectonics, seismotectonics, and seismic hazard assessment. Over a scientific career spanning more than six decades, he made fundamental contributions to the understanding of the tectonic evolution and active deformation of the Albanides, the characterization of Albania's seismic sources, and the development of Albania's seismic hazard framework.

From 1973 to 2007, he served as Head of the Department of Seismotectonics at the former Institute of Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, and from 2000 to 2007 as Director of the Institute. During his leadership, he played a key role in advancing seismological research and strengthening the integration of geology, tectonics, and earthquake studies in Albania.

His scientific legacy comprises more than 100 scientific publications, numerous geological and seismotectonic maps, and several landmark works, including Geology of Albania (2000) and Seismicity, Seismotectonics and Seismic Hazard Assessment in Albania (2010), which continue to serve as fundamental references for researchers and practitioners in Albania and the Balkan region.

Prof. Aliaj was also a dedicated mentor, inspiring generations of geologists and seismologists through his scientific rigor, generosity, and commitment to research. His contributions have left a lasting mark on the Earth sciences in Albania and will continue to inspire future generations.
